Larkin, J. M. (Washington State University, Pullman), and J. L. Stokes. Isolation of psychrophilic species of Bacillus. J. Bacteriol. 91:1667-1671. 1966.-Ninety psychrophilic isolates of Bacillus were obtained from soil, mud, and water by selective enrichment at 0 C. They grew well at 0 C, optimally at 20 to 25 C, and failed to grow at 30 or 35 C. Their minimal and maximal growth temperatures were lower than those for mesophilic species of Bacillus by 10 C or more. Growth of psychrophilic isolates also occurred at -2 and -4.5 C, and both spore formation and spore germination occurred at 0 C.

Taxonomy of psychrophilic strains of Bacillus.
The morphological and physiological characteristics of 20 isolates of psychrophilic Bacillus were compared with 29 strains representing nine species of mesophilic Bacillus and 2 strains of Sporosarcina ureae to determine the taxonomic position of the psychrophiles. The psychrophiles formed four distinct groups which were sufficiently different from the mesophiles to warrant their designation as...
متن کاملIsolation, Identification and Evaluation of Oil Hydrocarbon Decomposing Bacteria from Contaminated Areas of Oil Fields
Microbialbiodegradation is known as an effective and harmless method to overcome environmental pollution with oil hydrocarbon. Some bacterial species were isolated from the Sarvestan oilfields (Iran, Fars province), then identified and applied for oil hydrocarbon decomposition. A carbon-free minimum medium (CFMM) containing 1% crude oil was used to isolate bacteria through incubation at 30°C in...
متن کاملExpression of Bacillus Species Isolated Phytase Gene from Soil by PCR Method
Abstract Background and Objective: Recognizing and using of isolated phytase in the soil microorganisms are paramount importance to produce the Phytase enzyme utilized commercially in different industries. This study was conducted to recognize different bacillus species which are Phytase producers and detection of the gene that can produce this enzyme. Material and Methods: Soil samples were...
متن کاملIsolation of anthracene resistant positive gram bacteria from Imam Khomeini Port oil polluted sediments
Today's most of microorganisms are used for purification of hazard waste such as municipal and industrial waste water and oil contaminants. In this study 2 bacterial species were isolated and purified in hydrocarbon (anthracene) containing media from oil polluted sediment of Imam Khomeini port. Bacillus pasteurii and Amphibacillus xylanus species were identified as indicator degrading bacteria ...
متن کاملStudies on a thermophilic bacillus: its isolation, properties, and temperature coefficient of growth.
A thermophilic bacillus with minimal, optimal, and maximal growth temperatures of 40, 64.5, and 72 C, respectively, was isolated from soil. Biochemical and morphological studies place the isolate in group 1 of the classification of Walker and Wolf. After adaption to nitrate broth, the temperature coefficient for growth was found to be 20,400 cal/mol. When the temperature coefficient for growth ...
